Wh have a client who's backup intermittently reports as failed. The only clue in the backup log is the first storage group fails to backup.
The error references a VSS issue. A quick look at the VSS wrtiers
vssadmin list writers
This shows the Exchange Writter as failed. The only way to resolve this appears to be restart the information store.
